Weekend Preview - 12th/13th May
This weekend isn’t just about playing cricket, it will be about remembering one of our own. On Tuesday Westley Campbell passed away at just 37. Wes had been a member of the club since his school days and renowned as an enthusiastic, talented and colourful character – a naturally gifted player of football, cricket and golf. Although not having played much cricket in recent years he is fondly remembered by all of his contemporaries as a fun-loving, humorous young man who had a kind and gentle side which was especially valued by the younger players coming into the senior sides. In remembrance, we will be holding a minutes silence before all four of our senior games this weekend. We are also postponing our table tennis tournament scheduled for Saturday evening and instead inviting anybody who wishes to come to the pavilion for a drink as a club.
1st team – Middleton 2’s (A) 12.30pm
The 1st team return to Middleton for the first time since 2012 when they played their 1’s. This time round they play their 2’s. Last week Middleton 2’s suffered a big defeat at Horsham 2’s, whereas our 1’s won big at home to Crawley. Ally James will look to continue his impressive form with the bat, while James Askew, Nathan Perry, and Guy Souch will all be looking to add to the wickets they took last week.
Last year Middleton 2’s finished 3rd in the old Sussex division 5 west. Their top run scorer was Stuart Nelmes, and their top wicket taker was Glenn Houchen.
Team – J.Askew, M.Askew, Budd, Cox, C.Heberlein, James, T.Lee, Paul, Perry, Souch, Turner
2nd team – Broadbridge Heath (H) 1pm
The 2nd team host Broadbridge heath 1’s on Saturday, looking to build on the winning draw at Clymping last week. A tough game is expected as Broadbridge Heath were two leagues above last season. With captain Darren Bazley away on ‘private’ business, old boy Dan Rive takes the reins. Last week Broadbridge Heath beat Horsham 3’s by 3 wickets.
Last year Broadbridge Heath finished 10th in the old West Sussex division 2. Their top run scorer was Jordan Ruff, and their top wicket taker was Jeff Dawe.
Team - Atkinson, Greig, R.Heberlein, O.Hemsley, H.Howson, A.Mohsin, Parnell, Peach, Rive, Standing, White
3rd team – Rustington 2’s (H) 1pm
The 3rd team host local rivals Rustington 2’s at Fernhurst. Last year the 3’s had two close games against Rustington, but managed to come away with the win both times. The closest being the away game, when loudly supported by club members, Stewart Mohsin held his nerve to bowl a superb last over.
The 3’s had a tough start at East Preston last week, while Rustington fell 5 runs short of Findon’s 103.
Last year Rustington 2’s finished 7th. Their leading run scorer was John Johnson, and their leading wicket taker was Jamie Walker.
